California State Council Political Coordinator

Summary: The Political Coordinator position is responsible for implementing the State Council’s field program by working with locals on member participation, electoral, legislative, electoral, grassroots advocacy, and capacity building programs. The position also assists other State Council Field Staff in accomplishing the overall goals and objectives of the mission. Works under supervision of the Political Field Director.

Description: Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to:)

1. Achieving program goals.

2. Work with Local leaders, local, International Union and State Council staff to set and achieve political program goals.

3. Strategic planning, implementation, coordination and accountability of local union and multi-local campaigns and programs such as; voter registration, grassroots issues, member education and participation in electoral and issue campaigns.

4. Provide staff support and leadership to State Council issue teams, legislative programs and political campaigns.

5. Plan and coordinate State Council events and programs.

6. Coordinate SEIU’s endorsement process for candidates and ballot measures.

7. Plan and coordinate internal campaigns for endorsed candidates and initiatives.

8. Plan and staff external independent expenditure and CLC campaigns.

9. Coordinate local’s issue prioritization process and plan the coordinate field campaigns to support local’s legislation and budget priorities.

10. Plan, support, direct, participate in and support voter education and GOTV campaigns, both internally with SEIU locals, with labor-to-labor campaigns and independent expenditure campaigns.

11. Conduct and support training and leadership development programs for local union staff to support program implementation and capacity building

12. Track and report on field campaign activities, including issue and electoral campaigns and work with SEIU locals to increase their internal tracking and accountability

13. Support and/or coordinate SEIU participation with Central Labor Councils, the SEIU International Union and other coalition partners.

14. Fiscal Responsibilities: Responsible for use of organizational credit accounts as assigned and accurate accounting of personal business expenditures and expense reporting process. Implementation of departmental budget as directed.

15. Comfortable with extensive, repeated, and on going public contact on behalf of the State Council.

16. Physical Demands of Job: Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.

17. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Working Conditions and Environment:

This is a statewide position to be filled in one or more geographical areas as determined by the Field Director. Possession of a valid driver’s license and owning and operating an automobile are absolutely essential. Statewide travel, as well as travel elsewhere, and willingness to work long hours including nights and weekends. Ability to maintain professionalism and productivity in high-pressure environment.

Scope and Nature of Supervision:

This position reports directly to the Field Director.

Qualifications:

1. Demonstrated strategic planning and implementation of programs and/or campaigns.

2. Ability to assist with coordination of logistics for multiple campaigns and projects. simultaneously in a high-pressure environment requiring rapid adjustment to changing priorities and strategies.

3. A thorough understanding and appreciation of the skills necessary for long-term base building and leadership development.

4. Proven ability to work with a diverse group of people, including union staff and leaders, and elected officials to other State Council staff.

5. Outstanding interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to motivate, lead, build strong working relationships and hold others accountable.

6. Ability to garner consensus and move a regional program.

7. Strong organizational skills.

8. Minimum 3 years of experience with a union, or political, community or advocacy group, participating in electoral, issue and/or other campaigns.

9. Strong personal commitment to the State Council’s mission and values.

10. Ability to represent the SEIU State Council in all public activities including with elected officials, community allies and the labor community.

11. Strong writing and verbal communication skills.

12. Self-motivated, great attitude and strong team player.

13. Demonstrated ability to create a positive work environment that encourages personal responsibility, initiative and innovation.

14. Strong sense of professionalism, integrity and loyalty.

15. Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality of information related to and part of the necessary work of the organization.

16. Willingness to work long hours, including nights and weekends as necessary.

17. Working Knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

18. Thorough understanding of California’s political landscape preferred.

19. B.A. or B.S degree preferred.

20. Bilingual skills a plus.
