Statement: Supreme Court Action on Same-Sex Marriage Is Great News in Five States; Working People in Every State Deserve Equal Protection

Washington, DC - Today, the Supreme Court of the United States declined to review rulings on same-sex marriage in five states. Following is a statement from the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

Today, the Supreme Court declined to rule on whether same-sex couples have the right to marry. This is great news for LGBT workers in the five additional states where marriage equality will now be the law: Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin. In these states, LGBT workers will now have access to workplace laws -- such as employer-provided healthcare, retirement benefits and health and safety policies -- that protect married workers and their spouses. It is, however, shameful these cases will now need to proceed in a piecemeal fashion. But we are confident that ultimately the courts in every state will join public opinion that all families and all working people deserve equal protection of the laws."
