Healthcare Workers, Concerned Citizens Unite to Hold House Republicans Accountable for Trying to Rip Healthcare and Medicaid from Millions of Americans

Union Members, Faith Leaders, Patients and Family Members Hold Events May 3 - May 6 to send a clear message at midterm ballot box: we have not forgotten your vote.

WASHINGTON – One year ago this week, Republican leaders in Congress barely passed their behind-closed-doors crafted American Health Care Act (AHCA) that if passed by the Senate, was poised to gut Medicaid, rip healthcare from an estimated 24 million Americans, increase healthcare costs by as much 20 percent, and put millions of individuals out of work. This week, union healthcare workers and healthcare activists from all walks of life will launch events to let their members of Congress know they have not forgotten the vote that put the health of families and communities at risk.

“I spoke out last year with other healthcare workers to protect healthcare for my patients and for the working people in my community and across America. We’re coming together this week to remind Republicans in Congress who voted for the interests of wealthy corporations at the expense of working families. We are a movement that cannot be stopped and we will not forget about the essential care they tried to take from our families, patients, and the 1 in 5 Americans who rely on Medicaid,” said Patricia O’Hara, a New York home care worker.

SEIU members like O’Hara will participate in events such as roundtables with elected officials, parades, and phone banks. May 3 through May 6. The issue of quality, affordable healthcare has only grown more important to voters in the twelve months since the failure of Trumpcare. A HuffPost/YouGov poll this month showed that healthcare is the top issue for voters in the upcoming midterm elections. And according to April 2018 Public Policy Polling results, 66 percent of voters oppose Medicaid cuts.

Union workers are spreading the word to ensure voters know what would have been the real cost if Republicans in Congress had won full repeal of the Affordable Care Act, and how their ongoing efforts to sabotage healthcare and Medicaid and still a very real threat.
