SEIU Home Care Council leaders applaud selection of Becerra to lead HHS

Xavier Becerra has always stood beside us in that fight and we know he will continue to do so as HHS Secretary.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, DC - Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Executive Vice President Leslie Frane and SEIU Local 2015 President April Verrett released the following statement applauding President Elect Joe Biden’s selection of Xavier Becerra to be the next Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). Frane leads SEIU's healthcare work nationally and Verrett chairs SEIU's Home Care Council.

“As part of the nation’s largest union of healthcare workers, including 750,000 home care providers, SEIU members know that having healthcare is a basic human right, not a privilege, a belief that has been borne out by the coronavirus pandemic. Xavier Becerra has always stood beside us in that fight and we know he will continue to do so as HHS Secretary.

“His commitment to the women of color and immigrant women who comprise the majority of home care workers in America is particularly notable. When the Trump administration tried to silence their voices he stood by them, suing the administration and winning. We are thrilled that he will now be able to unrig the rules to ensure every working family in America — Black, white or brown — can thrive.”
