Alternative Transportation
Motor vehicles are the single largest single source of atmospheric pollution. Cars and trucks produce:
- Nitrogen oxide, a precursor of smog.
- Benzine, a carcinogen.
- Particulate matter, a trigger for asthma and other respiratory symptoms.
- Carbon dioxide, which contributes directly to climate change.
- Carbon monoxide, a probable carcinogen.
Through contract negotiations, unions can reduce this form of pollution by bargaining for a range of programs, including public transportation benefits, carpooling systems and incentives for bicycling, walking and telecommuting.
For union members, these provisions provide economic benefits, reduce the stress associated with driving, and have potential health benefits. For the employer, such provisions improve their reputations as a responsible environmental business.
