Haitian RN Joins Crisis Care Volunteers in Port-au-Prince

Originally from Haiti, NAGE/SEIU member Simone Adelugba is a registered nurse in the Critical Care Unit (CCU) at the Baltimore Veterans Administration Hospital. She's volunteered to travel to Haiti to assist with disaster relief in the wake of the earthquake, joining other health care professionals from the union already on the ground.

Economic Recovery That Works For Working People in America

The millions of working people in America reeling from the nation’s severe economic crisis need immediate action on a large economic recovery package that invests in state and local government to preserve essential services and invests in infrastructure and human services to create jobs.

We need an economic recovery package that reaches those most in need and makes our economy work for everyone – not just those at the top. We support president-elect Obama’s efforts to pass an economic recovery plan that will:

  • Save and create jobs by rebuilding the critical public services we all count on to keep our communities safe and healthy― especially healthcare, human services, education, and transportation infrastructure.
  • Cushion the pain felt by the millions of people who have either lost or are in danger of losing their jobs, homes, and healthcare, and by the working families in America who are struggling to get by.
  • Strengthen our economic competitiveness and put us on an environmentally sustainable path through investments that will reshape our health care and energy sectors.

SEIU’s 2 million members are engaged in a campaign to ensure that Congress quickly follows through and passes an economic recovery package with:

  • Major new funding directly to state and local government to maintain good jobs and vital community services.
  • More funding for Medicaid to protect people’s healthcare.
  • Technology and workforce investments in the healthcare and energy sectors to put us on an environmentally sustainable path.
  • Infrastructure investments (roads, bridges, schools, etc.) to create jobs and bolster local economies.
  • Temporary extension of unemployment benefits and food stamps to help families that already are suffering from the crisis
