Sen. Specter joins 29 other Senators in support of a public option

By Maria Tchijov on October 8, 2009 5:01 PM

The House won't pass a bill without a public option, and the Senate won't pass one with it. That statement, which has almost become a truism on Capitol Hill, was splashed with a healthy dose of reality by 30 Senators today, including Sen. Specter, who laid out their strong support for a public option.

Their letter to Majority Leader Harry Reid stating:

"We have spent the better part of this year fighting for health reform that would provide insurance access and continuity to every American in a fiscally responsible manner. We are concerned that -- absent a competitive and continuous public insurance option -- health reform legislation will not produce nationwide access and ongoing cost containment. For that reason, we are asking for your leadership on ensuring that the merged health reform bill contains a public insurance option."

The letter was signed by: Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.), Russ Feingold (D-Wis.), Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii), Tom Udall (D-N.M.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Roland Burris (D-Ill.), Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Jack Reed (D-R.I.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.), Benjamin Cardin (D-Md.), Al Franken (D-Minn.), Bob Casey (D-Pa.), Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii), Ted Kaufman (D-Del.), Arlen Specter (D-Pa.), Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), John Kerry (D-Mass.), Herb Kohl (D-Wis.) and Paul Kirk (D-Mass.).

Last week, SEIU Secretary-Treasurer Anna Burger wrote an op-ed in the Huffington Post demanding the Democrats cease hiding behind Republicans and stand up for a strong public option. Looks like at least 30 Senators took her advice.

Mr Bennet Comes to Denver

By Rafael Noboa Rivera on May 5, 2009 7:05 PM

Last Saturday, Sen. Michael Bennet met and spoke with nurses, security officers, janitors, and other union members from across Colorado at a townhall meeting about the Employee Free Choice Act and the immediate need for health care reform. It was the largest community group Sen. Bennet had spoken to since being appointed as Senator. Colorado workers gathered at the Denver headquarters of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers to hear new Colorado Senator Michael Bennet talk about the prospects for health care reform and the Employee Free Choice Act.

Senator Bennet heard from many of the people who've made this state great, and responded to their concerns in the video above.

The conversation was frank. Workers came away from talking with the senator knowing that, despite the fact that he hasn't taken a position on the Employee Free Choice Act, he was committed to the basic principles underlying the act, and that when it came to health care reform, every man, woman, and child should have affordable health care.

Despite the good exchange of views, the job is not yet finished. You can join our campaign to make rebuild an economy that works for everyone here, and you can invite your friends here.

Jet-Setting CEOs

By Rafael Noboa Rivera on March 31, 2009 1:18 PM

20090330-email-COsen.jpgRight now, Colorado CEOs are flying to Washington, DC to march on the offices of Colorado Senators Michael Bennet & Mark Udall. The CEOs - accompanied by corporate lobbyists - will demand that our senators refuse to level the playing field for Colorado's workers.

These CEOs are perfectly content with more of the same for our economy. They don't want to see our senators vote for the Employee Free Choice Act because they know it will help working people.

We need to stand up and tell our senators to focus on what matters. Senators Bennet and Udall should listen to workers, not CEOs, about how to fix our broken economy.

Click here to email your senators and ask them to support the Employee Free Choice Act.

Even before the recession began, middle class families were in trouble. Now faced with mounting unemployment rates, lost job hours and income, and no retirement security, we need to tell Senators Udall and Bennet to stand up for working people and support the Employee Free Choice Act.

That's why you need to write Mark Udall and Michael Bennet right now to let them know that Colorado needs the Employee Free Choice Act. If the Employee Free Choice Act becomes law, more Coloradans would be able to negotiate for health care and benefits, putting an extra $237 million per year in the pockets of working Coloradans, money that will help boost the economy.

In these times, that's the kind of boost that everyone could use.

Please write Michael Bennet and Mark Udall right now. We need an economy that works for everyone, not just CEOs
