Adopt-a-State for Healthcare Reform

By Jessica Kutch on November 18, 2009 11:17 AM

Adopt a state

Joe Lieberman is at it again. Jockeying for attention. Threatening to support a Republican filibuster. Overlooking popular support in his own state. But this time, he may not be alone.

Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-CT), Mary Landrieu (D-LA), Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) and Ben Nelson (D-NE) have each been targeted by the opposition to join a Republican filibuster. If that happens, health insurance reform will not move forward.

We can't sit on the sidelines while this political drama unfolds. And right now, you can have no greater impact than adopting a health care "swing state" as your own. Adopt-a-state, and begin recruiting now:

Join Team Connecticut (Sen. Lieberman)

Join Team Louisiana (Sen. Landrieu)

Join Team Arkansas (Sen. Lincoln)

Join Team Nebraska (Sen. Nelson)

The AP reported today that opponents of reform, led by the U.S. Chamber, have poured $24 million into an advertising onslaught in the last month alone. The fact is, we will be outspent by corporate special interests. But we can do something corporate American can't - we can talk to fellow voters, and have personal conversations about health care.

We elected Barack Obama, in part, by calling tens of thousands of voters in key "swing states." This year is no different. Voters in Arkansas, Nebraska, Connecticut and Louisiana need to hear from us about what's happening on health insurance reform. So adopt-a-state, and start recruiting for your team today.

P.S. If you live in one of our health care "swing states," even better! Adopt your own state, and start recruiting friends and family to join.

Breaking: DHS defers deportation of Walter Lara for one year

By Kate Thomas on July 2, 2009 2:40 PM

Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and the blogosphere have been buzzing over the past 48 hours, as thousands of grassroots activists and Congressional leaders contacted the Department of Homeland Security to stop the deportation of Walter Lara, a 23 year-old honor student facing deportation this Independence Day weekend. Today, Walter Lara was granted a one year stay of his deportation.

In response to DHS's deferment, Walter issued the following statement:

"Today, words cannot express my gratitude to Secretary Janet Napolitano, Senator Bill Nelson, Representatives Corrine Brown, Lincoln Diaz-Balart, and the thousands of grassroots activists whose unified efforts have given me a second chance to live out my American Dream.

"As I look to celebrate Independence Day with family and friends this weekend, I have once again seen what makes America the best country in the world. Americans are fair, just, and kind. When we unite our strength to defend our shared values -opening rather than shutting the doors of opportunity - we can achieve anything. As I have said before, America is the only country I have known and I am an American. I have never been more proud to say that than I am today.

"But even as the dust settles on this tremendous personal victory, my sights are clearly set on the struggle ahead to build a long-term future for me and the more than 2 million like me whose lives may be cut short and dreams deferred.

"The action taken by the leaders in Congress and the Department of Homeland Security is an acknowledgment that our immigration laws are broken. The DREAM Act, if passed, would help people like myself, who came here through no fault of their own, stay in this country, be put on a path to citizenship and contribute to our nation."
Tell Secretary Naplitano thank you for exercising her discretion and recognizing the value of students like Walter.

More background on Walter and the campaign that spread that wildfire to keep him from being deported after the break.

Sen. Ben Nelson: Anti-Free Choice Ads are "Smear tactics that insult me and my fellow Nebraskans"

By Michael Whitney on December 22, 2008 7:04 PM

Senator Ben Nelson (NE) issued a clear statement aimed at secretly-funded advertisements running in Nebraska that attack the Employee Free Choice Act.

Nelson called the ads:

"Sleazy and intentionally confusing" ... "Unfair" ... "Demeaning and misleading" ... "Smear tactics that insult me and my fellow Nebraskans."

Local 226 President, Suzy Anderson, in Omaha, Nebraska commented,

Corporate America has shown just how out of touch they are with America's economic problems. They believe that the problem with our economy is that workers are paid too much and that their wages should be cut. For working families already struggling to make ends meet, that's the last thing they should have to worry about.

"This attack against working people from a business-funded front group is a desperate attempt to distract from what really matters," says SEIU National Political Director Jon Youngdahl, faulting the ad. "America's families need change that works to rebuild the middle class with the free choice to join unions for better wages, benefits, and retirement security. That's why we need the Employee Free Choice Act."

SEIU calls on "Americans for Job Security" to engage in an honest conversation with Nebraskans about their positions rather than trying to mislead Nebraskans.

Bullying Senator Nelson or other Members of Congress simply won't work, which the Senator made clear in his statement about the ads:

"These folks shot themselves in the foot. While aiming."

For more information:

  • Read Senator Nelson's full statement.
  • SEIU dismantled the ads as "out of touch" distractions and lists the myths of the ad.
