Important Information Regarding the Johnson & Johnson Vaccine

April 15, 2021

You may have heard that distribution of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine has been paused following six reports of a rare but serious possible side effect. Here’s what we know:

These events are extremely rare. More than 6.8 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine have been administered. CDC and FDA are currently reviewing data involving six reported U.S. cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot in individuals who received the J&J vaccine. FDA and CDC announced that out of an abundance of caution, they have recommended a pause in the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine as they review this data.

This action is clear evidence that the FDA is taking every step necessary to ensure that vaccines are safe and that clear and transparent information is available to all. Even when the incidence of side effects is as rare as is the case here, the FDA will conduct a thorough review of the situation and communicate all of the available information to the American public.

Tens of millions of people in the U.S. have been vaccinated safely with Pfizer and Moderna over the past several months, and there is more than enough supply to continue the current pace of vaccinations of 3 million shots per day. State and federal partners are working now to get anyone currently scheduled for a J&J vaccine quickly rescheduled for a Pfizer or Moderna vaccine.

Vaccines save lives and are our best hope for a return to normal life. Everyone who is able should get vaccinated as soon as possible.
