Employee Free Choice Act Fast Facts Update: Restoring the Middle Class

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for ChangeThatWorks_logo.jpgDid you hear about the corporate CEOs who just agreed that paying themselves 344 times more than their workers was hurting our economy by undermining consumer spending power - and have decided to reduce their pay and offer workers a raise and better benefits?

That's the question posed in "The Boardroom," a national television ad in favor of the Employee Free Choice Act that was just aired for three weeks by American Rights at Work, a broad coalition of labor and workers' rights advocates, including SEIU.

Of course, in the ad -- as in reality -- it's a dream.

In the ad, the worker who dreams it all wakes up in his bed while the narrator says, "If you think this is going to happen by itself, you're dreaming. The Employee Free Choice Act will let workers choose to join a union and negotiate for better wages and benefits."

Dream On...

Working people are bearing the brunt of today's troubled economy. Even before the recent Wall Street collapse, workers' paychecks were shrinking and healthcare costs were skyrocketing out of control. One thing is clear: restoring our middle class is the key to getting our economy back on track. And one of the best ways to help American families improve their standard of living is to pass the Employee Free Choice Act. By offering workers a fair and simple path to forming unions, they will have the opportunity to earn better wages and benefits. Workers in unions earn 30% higher wages and are 59% more likely to have employer-provided health insurance.

Bipartisan Legislation with Strong, Public Support

The Employee Free Choice Act is an overwhelmingly popular with the American public. In a poll conducted by Peter D. Hart Research Associates, 60% of voters believe that in these tough economic times, it is important to pass the Employee Free Choice Act. The poll also shows that 31% of voters strongly believe that this bill should be a priority for Congress. You can read the poll here.

President-elect Obama, a cosponsor of the bill in 2007, has clearly stated his strong support for the measure: "I've fought to pass the Employee Free Choice Act in the Senate. And I will make it the law of the land when I'm President of the United States of America." (Speech in Philadelphia, 4/2/08)
