SEIU Healthcare's Resident Physicians Comment on "Extended Shifts" Report

A Serious New Report on the Issue of Resident Work Hours by the Institute of Medicine

In response to the Institute of Medicine report, "Resident Duty Hours: Enhancing Sleep, Supervision, and Safety," SEIU's Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR) released a statement yesterday calling for stronger limits on extended resident work.

CIR welcomed IOM's report on resident work hours, but took the occasion to also call for stronger limits on extended shifts."No other profession is scheduled to work 30 hours at a stretch," said CIR President L. Toni Lewis, MD. "Scheduling resident physicians so that we are well-rested is an important element in improving our healthcare system."
