| Summary: | SEIU United Service Workers West is now hiring a bilingual (English/Spanish) Communications Specialist to lead media relations and member communications for the San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California. SEIU United Service Workers West is a state-wide California union that is on the cutting edge of progressive activism, building the power of low-wage workers and engaging in larger social issues such as immigration, health care, and housing. United Service Workers West represents over 40,000 janitors, airport workers, security officers, and other service workers in some of the states most vital industries, such as commercial real estate, hi-tech, aviation, retail, and entertainment. The union is home to the Justice for Janitors, Stand for Security and Airport Workers United campaigns that have successfully improved the lives of thousands of low wage and immigrant workers throughout the country. |
| Description: | • Develop and implement communications strategy for public campaigns including developing message strategies, media strategies, and creating materials to shape press coverage, impact the general public, and sway political and community leaders to support the union’s campaigns. • Develop and implement internal communications program that educates members, developing message strategies, working with members and staff to write and design newsletters and leaflets, and providing editorial and design training/support for staff. • Manage relationships with the media, train members to be spokespeople, and provide support to union’s leadership to speak with the public. |
| Qualifications: | • Two years communications experience, preferably in a union or non-profit environment • Proven track record in strategic communications • Strong written and verbal communication skills • Bilingual in Spanish/English • Demonstrated commitment to social justice • Computer & graphic design skills • Motivated self starter who is also a solid team player • Able to work long and irregular hours • Driver’s license and reliable car |
| Compensation: | • Salary is competitive and negotiable based on prior non-profit communications experience • Full benefits package including health insurance, pension plan, car allowance, and paid vacation |
