Summary: SEIU Local 1021 was founded in 2007 when 10 local unions came together in northern California to form one larger, more p1owerful union. Together our members are building a true 21st century union fighting to empower and improve the lives of our members. We are 58,000 strong—organizing and representing public service workers in cities, counties, courts, schools, private non-profits, special districts, public health care, and nursing. Description: RESPONSIBILITIES: Will work with the Organizing staff to implement the organizing plan of the Local Union. Identify and recruit worker leaders who want to organize to join the union. Responsible for evaluation of potential organizing targets, direct contact with unorganized workers, development of leadership and structure of organizing campaigns, as well as the conduct of organizing drives and representation elections. Mobilize union members to support new organizing. This is not a 9 to 5 job – long and varied hours, with early morning, evening and weekend work, as necessary. May require travel and periods of overnights. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: You will conduct worksite meetings, offsite meetings, and house visits with workers; develop weekly and monthly plans based on overall campaign goals; identify worker issues, mobilize workers for public actions, track worker data; identify and help lawyers to file legal and regulatory charges and law suits to support the campaign. SKILLS, APTITUDE, AND COMMITMENT: • Ability to work effectively as part of a team. • High level ability to communicate orally and in writing. • Ability to work under pressure and with minimal supervision; must be well-organized and self-motivated. • Ability to exercise good judgment and discern priorities. • Ability to make effective use of resources available to the union. • Dedication to improving the position of working people and strengthening the role of organized labor in society through work actions, community relations, and legislative and political activity. • Ability to work effectively with members and staff from diverse ethnic, social, and economic groups. EXPERIENCE: Experience in union organizing, representation, and negotiations highly desirable, but not required. Related experience will be given consideration as will steward and rank-and-file experience. Local 1021 seeks to maintain a staff which is representative of a wide variety of backgrounds in order that the union truly reflects our members’ interests and concerns. REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid California driver’s license, auto insurance, and an automobile for business use.
