Bank Workers Worldwide Speak Out Against "Hard Sell" to Customers

In a teleconference briefing today, UNI Finance Global Union gathered bank employees from the United States, United Kingdom, Brazil, and Denmark for a "special insider media briefing" on short-term, profit-driven banking procedures that put customers and economies at risk.

Here in the U.S., where predatory lending and sales practices are particularly bad, workers often feel powerless to fight back because the finance sector is entirely non-union. "Bank of America policies led to its bankers selling products that are inappropriate for the customer and likely to result in serious financial problems. We need real whistleblower protections so we can sound the alarm when dangerous banking practices are harming consumers and threatening our larger economy," explained a personal banker at Bank of America in Washington, DC.

Finance workers want to be rewarded for providing good, trustworthy service and advice to customers--not selling inadequate financial products because banks' sales targets are too high for this economy. What is needed is a new customer-oriented and risk-conscious business model based on sustainable growth.Read more about a new business model to reshape the international financial industry.
