Tonight, April 1st, SEIU President Andy Stern will be recognized for his social and political advocacy work by Reverend Al Sharpton and the National Action Network (NAN) at the 11th annual Keepers of the Dream awards. Each April, the Keepers of the Dream Awards mark the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s death, who was killed on April 4, 1968 while in Memphis to support striking sanitation workers trying to form a union. No single person made greater contributions toward the advancement of both the civil rights and labor movements than Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Keepers of the Dream Award honors are bestowed upon individuals who advocate for the principles for which Dr. King gave his life and to members of the civil rights community who have committed themselves to fairness and racial harmony.
This year's Keepers of the Dream award nominees also include: Andre Harrell of Harrell Music; Larry King of Larry King Live; Esther Silver-Parker, SVP of Diversity Relations for Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.; Alfred Liggins, Chairman and CEO of Radio & TV One Inc.; Andy Stern, President of Service Employees International Union (SEIU); Robin Roberts of Good Morning America; Mayor Dwight Jones of Richmond, Virginia; and Maurice Cox, VP of Diversity & Inclusion Development at PepsiCo.
