24 Hours Karen Kinkel

Today we are taking the day to feature stories of every day Iowans who have struggled because of a lack of quality, affordable health care. Every hour, on the hour, we will feature a new story in the hope that these faces and their struggles persuade Senator Charles Grassley that true reform cannot happen without a public health care plan option, and that quality, affordable health care needs to be available to every Iowan.

Karen Kinkel
Des Moines, IA

As a 52 year-old single mom, I am fortunate to have a full-time job.

I work as a private duty home health care aide / CNA. But I live in constant fear of losing my health insurance. According to our policy, if I am unable to work a shift, due to an illness, my full-time house may be cut. This would make me ineligible for my health insurance benefits.

Working as a HHA/CNA can be very demanding, yet fulfilling. I know my clients appreciate the care I provide. However, the physical demands of my job has put some serious wear and tear on my body. But I don't have a choice. Most of us learn to work through our physical pain when we're left to choose between making money to make ends meet and homelessness.

Should I lose my health insurance, I am doomed. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to save any money over the years and would have a very difficult time finding another job at this stage in my life. Given the amount of layoffs across the country, this scenario isn't unlikely.

I would be in good company, though. Should I be left without a job or home, Des Moines is a very generous city. I would be able to find food. Some shelter?? Maybe. Another job?? Forget it. Quality health insurance?? Only in my dreams!!!

We need to change the health care system now. 2009 is the year to pass comprehensive health care reform.
