24 Hours Mary Vasey

Today we are taking the day to feature stories of every day Iowans who have struggled because of a lack of quality, affordable health care. Every hour, on the hour, we will feature a new story in the hope that these faces and their struggles persuade Senator Charles Grassley that true reform cannot happen without a public health care plan option, and that quality, affordable health care needs to be available to every Iowan.

Mary Vasey
Iowa City, IA

A family member of Mary's had good private insurance when she became ill. She was sick for over three years and her insurance company eventually dropped her coverage. She struggled to keep up with her health as the medical debt started piling up. Finally, she was able to file for disability insurance and her health recovered slightly. Now she's back at work but hasn't completely recovered. With a public insurance option, she'd never have had gaps in her coverage, her health would have recovered much earlier, and she wouldn't be burdened with loads of medical debt.
