Time's up: SEIU members and Californians crank up the heat on Schwarzenegger

Adopting the "shared sacrifice" approach Governor Schwarzenegger has made the centerpiece of his budget rhetoric, the Joint Legislative Conference Budget Committee approved a budget package that makes deep cuts to education, health care, home care and other critical services.

But Governor Schwarzenegger has indicated that his idea of "shared sacrifice" is to force the entire budget burden on working families and those who can least afford it. He has refused to support a budget that contains his own previous proposals for modest oil extraction fees and insurance fees that would fund critical public safety services. And on Saturday, the Governor submitted a package of proposals to Democratic leaders that includes lowering pension and retiree health-care benefits for state workers. Schwarzenegger also plans to sign an executive order today forcing state workers to take a third furlough day each month--essentially slashing the pay of 200,000 state workers by an additional 4.6 percent.

If Governor Schwarzenegger refuses to sign the budget plan approved by both houses of the state legislature by the end of today, the state will begin issuing IOUs in lieu of checks to pay debts owed to seniors, people with disabilities, small businesses and others who are counting on the state to make ends meet.Time is quickly running out, and SEIU members in California are taking action today at the Governor's offices across the state today to tell him that enough is enough.
