Description: SERVICE EMPLOYEES INTERNATIONAL UNION (SEIU), the nation's fastest growing labor organization representing more than 2 million workers, is seeking a Political and Legislative Director for its Property Services Division at its Washington, DC headquarters.

The Property Service Division Political & Legislative Director will be responsible for driving the national political and policy program for the Division, convening groups of local staff involved in joint political activity, building the capacity of local political programs, and coordinating the Division’s political/policy program with its organizing, research and communications staff and with SEIU’s government relations, politics, and related departments.

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Directs Division efforts around political/policy campaigns related to growth in focus areas – multi-service, security, and janitorial.
  • Direct political elements of national organizing campaigns, coordinating with other departments and locals.
  • Develops strategy on federal contracting in areas including the Service Contract Act, federal disability set-asides, airport policy and other procurement in Property Service Sectors.
  • Represents the Division in International planning and advocacy for Employee Free Choice, Health Care Reform, and other key federal initiatives.
  • Coordinates among Locals in political planning for national elections in races important to the Division’s growth.
  • Coordinates with Division leaders and International staff on multi-local political support for organizing campaigns and contributions/ field support among Division locals in important electoral campaigns.
  • Convenes “best practices” discussions of local political staff on priority policy areas; crafting model legislation on economic development, public contracting and other areas to move at the local and state level.
  • Works with International COPE staff to target Locals for training and support; and organizes trainings on endorsement processes, electoral field work and other political capacity building for local staff and leaders on key policy areas.
  • Performs other duties as required to support the division’s political program.

Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field or equivalent formal training including five (5) years of supervisory experience or a combination of education and experience that would provide for the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Strong knowledge and experience in political and legislative work
  • Advanced knowledge of the labor, industry/sector and key public policy issues
  • Ability to execute campaign goals and objectives, to work effectively with local leaders, and carry out required objectives
  • Extensive experience directing large, complex external union organizing campaigns, developing strategy, managing staff, and coordinating resources
  • Demonstrated experience working independently in complex political situations
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • Ability to handle multiple “priority” projects and meet established timelines
  • Ability to use personal computer and a Microsoft Office programs.
