Just days before Members of Congress return to Washington, DC to consider healthcare reform legislation, Mainers discussed the need for quick action with Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius in Orono. On the campus of The University of Maine, the Secretary took part in a panel discussion about the importance of passing health insurance reform that makes healthcare affordable for all Americans.

The diverse group of panelists included Joe and Linda McSwain who own Mid Maine Restoration, Inc. The McSwain's had always provided full healthcare coverage to their employees, but because of rising costs they have been forced to reduce and even eliminate coverage. "Over the past few years, we have seen our premiums go up again and again. Something has to happen to promote competition that will make health insurance affordable for small businesses like mine," said Mr. McSwain.

During the question and answer period, Secretary Sebelius explained how President Obama's three principals for real reform will help reduce costs for small business owners like the McSwains', and guarantee that everyone can choose their own doctor. Maine Medical Association Board Chair Stephanie Lash said, "Patients need to be back in control of their care, the President's goals for reform will do just that - providing patients with the freedom to choose their plan and doctor. It's this sort of reform that has physicians and other healthcare providers supporting health insurance reform."

In addition to guaranteeing choice and access to quality care, reform will also reduce costs for Maine families who are barely holding onto their coverage, like Mary Morse-Dwelley. After several illnesses, the Morse-Dwelley's annual insurance premium skyrocketed to $24,000 for a family of three. "If Congress doesn't act soon, I don't know what we'll do," said Morse-Dwelley. "Medical debt almost forced us into bankruptcy and may yet take away our business. We are living proof that the insured need healthcare reform just as much as those who don't have coverage."

Families across the country may not have to wait much longer for reform. Four of five Congressional committees have finished work on healthcare legislation and Congress is closer to passing comprehensive reform than it has been in decades. The panel concluded with a plea to Maine's congressional delegation: We need healthcare reform, and we need it now! It's time to get it done.
