On November 22nd and 23rd, 2,000 members of SEIU United Long Term Care Workers (ULTCW) joined together in Los Angeles to chart a new direction for the home care and nursing home workers union. Speaking in English, Spanish, Armenian, Cantonese, Mandarin and many other languages, members presented their own ideas and vision for the union, captured in a report called "Reflect, Rebuild, Renew."
In particular, the ULTCW members focused on ways to hold honoring the diversity of the membership, developing more education and training tools to serve the people they care for, preventing state politicians from cutting services, and building trust and engaging more members in the union.
Perhaps the most captivating visual of the two-day event was the creation and display of the Hopes and Dreams mosaic. Members envisioned their hopes as a result of the actions being taken contained in the "Reflect, Rebuild, Renew" report, recording these hopes in writing on 2" by 3" cards. The thousands of cards were collected and transformed into an amazing 8' by 12' multi-colored mosaic display (displayed behind speaker and ULTCW co-trustee Laphonza Butler, above). The mosaic was a prefect symbol that showed the beauty of what's possible when hope and dreams are united together.
Speakers at the leadership summit included Co-Trustee Laphonza Butler, LA County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, SEIU Secretary-Treasurer Anna Burger, SEIU President Andy Stern, Actor and union advocate Danny Glover, and SEIU Executive Vice-President Gerry Hudson.
