Summary: SEIU Benefits Fund Office is seeking a Pension Assistant. There are several vacancies one of which requires bilingual skills.

Description: This position is responsible for processing applications for Retirement Benefits payments according to multiple plan rules, ERISA, DOL, IRS tax regulations.

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Calculates benefits according to plan and/or merger document specifications.
  • Monitors and maintains status of applications submitted to Benefit Funds Office.
  • Corresponds, both verbally and in writing, with participants, contributing employers, local union and plan consultants.
  • Researches, analyzes and resolves benefit related delinquencies in coordination with Central Collections Section of Benefit Funds Office.
  • Maintains Pension Master File Records including: a) tax withholdings b) union dues withholdings, c) pensioners working after retirements recalculations, d) pensioners exceeding limits for working after retirement, e) Beneficiaries receiving balance of guaranteed benefits
  • Extensive oral and written correspondence with members regarding eligibility requirements.
  • Prepares and coordinates reports for Trustees Meetings.
  • Performs other duties as required to support the department and its mission.
Qualifications: Graduation from high school, associates degree in business, CEBS course work preferred or equivalent experience, and at least two (2) years in retirement benefits/claims processing; including evaluating eligibility for benefits applicable to plan document, or a combination of education and experience that would provide for the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Knowledge of and experience analyzing and interpreting plan language and applicable merger agreements.
  • Knowledge of unions and/or non-profit environment preferred.
  • Knowledge of ERISA regulations, DOL and IRS Tax Regulations.
  • Demonstrated written and oral communications skills relating to all phases of benefit eligibility and payments.
  • Good aptitude for figures and attention to detail absolutely necessary.
  • Proficient in the use of personal computers using word processing software or other SEIU software including Microsoft Office Suite, Word Intermediate, Excel
  • Intermediate, Access Intermediate, PowerPoint Introduction.
  • Spanish/English fluency for the bilingual position.
