Every time Goldman Sachs (the financial giant busy doing God's work) crops back up in the news, the same question runs through my mind - and I mean this with all sincerity:
"How can people so clueless be getting so rich with our money?"
That's what I was thinking yesterday when news leaked that Goldman Sachs has banned their employees from gathering in groups of 12 or more outside the office. The brain trust at 85 Broad St. thought it might look bad if their employees were seen throwing large parties to celebrate their continued wealth while the rest of the country suffered. A lavish gathering with you and 10 of your closest friends? Fine. But add one more person and it might be seen as insensitive.
That's nothing, though, compared to today's news. Bloomberg is reporting that Goldman Sachs execs are loading up on firearms "and are now equipped to defend themselves if there is a populist uprising against the bank." The NYPD confirmed that, in fact, senior-level Goldman executives are now packing heat to protect themselves from... us?
So, let's get this straight. Goldman Sachs orchestrates a financial ruse of global proportions, crashes the US economy and the economies of our closest friends, takes billions of our tax dollars to cover their behinds while millions of us lose our homes, our jobs, and our savings - and now they're scared of us because we're calling for reform?
They just don't get it. The thousands of people that showed up outside their door in Chicago and DC aren't part of some violent mob; we're taxpayers who've been taken for a ride by Wall Street and want to get off at the next stop. Our message has been clear and simple every time: stop using our money on lobbying and bonuses.
If we really want to get the message across, I guess we're going to have to go meet them in New York. On December 14th - around the time Wall Street banks are expected to announce their bonuses for 2009 - we're gathering outside Goldman Sachs to suggest some alternate uses for that money.
And, this time, you can be a part of it even if you aren't in New York. There will be dozens of actions taking place in cities across the country at the same time - all outside the big banks that have taken our tax dollars but done nothing to help get the economy moving again.
We'll have the details at SEIU.org/bigbanks in the next few days about how you can get involved. I hope you'll come out and join us. And I hope we won't need to wear our bulletproof vests.
