Obama touched on many issues in his SOTU address that matter deeply to the members of our union -- creating new jobs, passing health reform and holding accountable the parties that crashed our economy (to name a few). Here are some of the best policy moments, in my opinion, from his speech last night:
On jobs:
"Jobs must be our number one focus in 2010, and that is why I am calling for a new jobs bill tonight" [...]On health care:
"Here's what I ask of Congress, though: Do not walk away from reform. Not now. Not when we are so close. Let us find a way to come together and finish the job for the American people."On bank bailouts:
I nodded my head vigorously in agreement when Obama said this about his proposed fee on the biggest banks: "I know Wall Street isn't keen on this idea, but if these firms can afford to hand out big bonuses again, they can afford a modest fee to pay back the taxpayers who rescued them in their time of need."While Obama reiterated the necessity of the bank bailout, he also acknowledged its unpopularity in one of the funnier, more lighthearted moments of the night:
On financial reform that benefits Main Street:
Accountability: Obama surprised me by calling out his fellow Democrats last night, reminding them that people (aka the voters that got you here) "expect us to solve some problems, not run for the hills." I mentally patted him on the back when he said that. One can only hope that this sentiment is repeated often, and much more strongly, behind close doors from here on out.
