Next week, from Des Moines, Iowa to Charlotte, North Carolina, thousands of faith, labor and other immigrant rights advocates will launch the largest and most coordinated field operation in the history of the immigration reform movement. Holding nearly 100 rallies at district offices, vigils, watch parties and press events across the country, activists will make clear that this is the year get comprehensive immigration reform passed through Congress and signed into law.
The diverse Reform Immigration FOR America (RI4A) coalition--which includes law enforcement, faith leaders, labor activists, and business--will use the "immigration week of action" to present a shared vision for the key elements that must be included in any successful immigration reform bill, including:
- Creating millions of new taxpayers by requiring undocumented immigrants to register, go through background checks, pay taxes, and study English on their way to becoming full U.S. citizens
- Protecting workers, lifting wages and helping boost economic recovery
- Enhancing our national security by focusing our enforcement and security measures on the most dangerous threats to our communities
- Restoring order
- Keeping families together; and
- Protecting the due process rights of all
If you are a member of an SEIU Local, we urge you to participate in this immigration week of action! To kick off our field efforts, SEIU locals will be holding member watch parties to view SEIU's new immigration video and learn about the legislative fight ahead. Learn more about the week of action and find out how you can get involved by emailing Joaquin.Guerra@seiu.org.
