The group of health care activists that began walking 135 miles ago in Philadelphia were greeted by hundreds of supporters as they arrived in Washington, D.C. today. They wore out their shoes in honor of Melanie Shouse, an activist who had breast cancer and died recently because she couldn't find affordable coverage for treatment.

Ahead of the president's bipartisan health care summit tomorrow, SEIU President Andy and HCAN's Richard Kirsch led a rally of several hundred spirited activists, union members and community leaders in Washington to demand Congress pass meaningful health insurance reform. It was an eye-catching procession, as hundreds of spirited marchers holding signs, balloons and carnations joined the last leg of Melanie's March, from Union Station to Capitol Hill.

Over 1 million voices advocating health insurance reform were heard by members of Congress today as part of the Virtual March on Washington to urge lawmakers to get reform done, and get it done right. Progressive groups including MoveOn, SEIU and Health Care For America Now (HCAN) aimed to inundate Congress with one million phone calls, email messages, blog posts, faxes, social networking updates, and in-person visits to their offices in a single day--and succeeded in a big way. Beginning at 8 a.m. this morning, phone lines, fax machines and email inboxes all over Capitol Hill were tied up. Check out the still-rising tally at MoveOn here.
