Furloughs End for 50K+ California State Workers

No more furlough Fridays in California for special fund employees

Judge's ruling means help is on the way

Yesterday morning in superior court, Alameda County Superior Court Judge Roesch issued a tentative ruling partially lifting the stay that Gov. Schwarzenegger's attorneys sought. This means that furloughs will end immediately, impacting more than 50,000 SEIU Local 1000 represented workers who work for special fund agencies like the DMV and Cal-Trans.

The workers and SEIU Local 1000's attorneys had been fighting against Gov. Schwarzenegger's illegal 14% pay cut (via thrice-monthly furloughs) for over a year. Now these workers will go back to a regular work schedule, although the stay on back pay has not been lifted at this time.

How do the workers feel about this ruling? SEIU Cal-Trans employee Jeff Fowler sums it up right here:

"Oh, it's great. A lot of our members are completely ecstatic right now. Right now so many people have lost their homes, lost their cars, maxed out their credit cards, so it's a huge relief for us."
