The LA Times reported on Friday that President Obama and members of his team are working behind the scenes to push key Senators--Democrat Charles E. Schumer and Republican Lindsey Graham--to move forward with introducing bipartisan immigration legislation this spring.
"According to a person familiar with the meeting, the White House may ask Schumer and Graham to at least produce a blueprint that could be turned into legislative language," says the LA Times.
"The basis of a bill would include a path toward citizenship for the 10.8 million people living in the U.S. illegally. Citizenship would not be granted lightly, the White House said. Undocumented workers would need to register, pay taxes and pay a penalty for violating the law. Failure to comply might result in deportation. While the LA Times article is receives significant attention by lobbyists and bloggers, it's up to the immigrant advocacy community to continue putting the pressure on Congress and the White House to follow through with their promises.
"Nick Shapiro, a White House spokesman, said the president's support for an immigration bill, which would also include improved border security, was "unwavering.""
Every day that we wait to pass smart immigration reform, more families are separated, more workers are pitted against each other, and more bad-actor employers are empowered to game the system for their own benefit. Until Congress acts, taxpayers who pay their full and fair share continue to be undercut by workers and employers who do not. And employers who pay decent wages, offer good benefits, and follow all the rules will continue are undercut by bad-actor employers who game the system to gain an unfair advantage.
This is the time to create the momentum and urgency for comprehensive immigration reform. Join us on March 21! http://action.seiu.org/page/s/savethedate4cir
