Senator Mikulski: What Health Care Reform Will Do For Women

Senator Mikulski took to the Senate floor this morning to deliver a passionate speech about her work to end the punitive practices of insurance companies towards women.

"For too long, in too many ways, they treated simply being a woman as a pre-existing condition. In eight states, domestic violence was viewed as a pre-existing condition. You talk about being abused, you were abused by your husband, then you were abused by your insurance company.

"Well, we're not going to be battered any more by these insurance companies."

Watch here:

The health care reform legislation changes things for women across the U.S., by recognizing many of the underlying factors that result in women receiving unequal access to health care. No longer will women face gender discrimination or lifetime caps on benefits. Domestic violence abuse victims will no longer have to struggle to afford care while they attempt to rebuild their lives.

More: The National Women's Law Center has state-by-state fact sheets that show how health reform will help women in all 50 states.
