When insurance reform advocate Regina Holliday shared her personal health care story following Melanie's March for health reform on Capitol Hill last Wednesday, it had a profound and moving effect on everyone in the room--health care activists, union members, several Senators and their staff...even the media covering the event.
In fact, it's practically impossible not to get choked up listening to Regina talk about losing the love of her life because they couldn't afford to pay for a $20,000 elective surgery procedure that would've been "no big deal"....until it was.
In the richest country in the world, two parents who work a total of 4 part-time and 1 full-time job should be able to pay their rent and afford to buy health insurance for themselves and their kids. We need reform, and we need it now.
Since her husband Frederick's death in June 2009, Regina has spent more of her time painting murals on Connecticut Avenue and throughout the DC Metro area to draw attention to the need for health care reform and patient's rights. Below is the tribute mural Regina painted for Fred--her treatise on the current medical system.
