Did you know nursing home workers, home care workers, and janitors have some of the highest rates of wage theft in America? Wage theft is when an employer pays a worker for less than the hours they worked, for less than the agreed wage, or fails to pay overtime, minimum wage or workers' compensation. Union workers have a contract that protects their right to a dollar paid for a dollars worth of work, but non-union workers have to rely on government enforcement agencies.
Thanks in part to the hard work of SEIU members, there is now a new, more vigorous sheriff on the job. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis has kicked off the new We Can Help campaign to better enforce wage and hour rules. Watch Secretary Solis speak at the April 1st launch of the DOL's new wage theft protection campaign:
Go to www.dol.gov/wecanhelp and find out how health care workers can make sure they get paid every dollar they've worked hard to earn and are due.
