American Red Cross Workers Strike for Safety

RedCross721_strikingworkers.jpg

American Red Cross workers went on strike across Southern California -- and the nation -- on June 2nd. They are seeking a fair contract that protects our families and donor safety. The California Red Cross members are joined by striking union members in West Virginia, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and New York.

U.S. Rep. Judy Chu, a former Red Cross board member, joined medical workers at a rally in front of the Red Cross's Pomona district office. Red Cross workers spoke to reporters from KABC-7, KCBS-2, Univision and local newspapers and radio.

Here are some voices from the strike line:

Therese Mendoza, RN:

"The people who draw blood and test blood know best how to make sure America's blood supply is safe. That's why we're putting our jobs on the line - to ensure that working conditions at Red Cross promote donor safety, and reduce blood safety errors on the job."

Monica Marquez, collections technician:

"I love my job and the critical work we do supplying blood to trauma centers and hospitals. We can make things better at the Red Cross, but for no logical or major financial reason they have refused."

Andrea Avila, collections technician:

"When we're understaffed, Red Cross wants the quantity but they don't want the quality. That's why we're here."

U.S. Rep. Judy Chu:

"As a Red Cross board member, I learned that it is the Red Cross workers who make this organization happen. You are the ones making sure the blood supply is there, and it's safe."
