On Memorial Day, nearly 200 SEIU United Service Workers West members rallied outside of the Los Angeles Dodger's stadium during a game against the Phoenix-based Diamondbacks. With signs reading "It Stops in Arizona," and "It's Time to Lead: Pass Comprehensive Immigration Reform NOW," SEIU janitors and security officers handed out leaflets calling for the Dodgers to live up to their legacy of standing up against discrimination--as they did in 1947 when the then-Brooklyn Dodgers signed on Jackie Robinson and broke baseball's color barrier.
"The Dodgers have the largest Latino fan base in the league," said SEIU USWW president Mike Garcia. "We have historically supported them since their move here in 1958; now we're asking them to take a stand for us -- take a stand against this mean-spirited bill."

In an effort to bring politics to the baseball field, SEIU members joined with civil rights and immigrant rights leaders to urge the Dodgers to stop using their Arizona-based spring-training facilities. Activists also called on MLB Commissioner Bud Selig to move the MLB All-Star Game out of Arizona in 2011.
At the same time, SEIU members spoke out against the Phoenix-based Diamondbacks, whose general managing partner Ken Kendrick is a known supporter of Republican politicians and a vocal supporter of SB 1070.
