Last week, SEIU members and working families won a symbolic victory against health insurers. That's because HealthCare.gov launched - a resource center for Americans researching and purchasing health insurance. Never before have consumers had access to a comprehensive and impartial source of information on health insurance policies. And beginning in October 2010, Healthcare.gov will include details on how much each plan costs - making it easier for Americans to compare prices when purchasing insurance.
But even if you're not currently in the market for a health plan, HealthCare.gov contains useful information for Americans. Our favorite feature is a timeline of implementation for the Affordable Care Act. It allows users to preview future improvements to our health care system, and to appreciate what SEIU members and millions of other Americans accomplished in pushing Congress to finally act on fixing our broken health care system. For example, on September 23rd, 2010, it will be illegal for insurers to deny coverage to children with pre-existing conditions. Also beginning in September, insurance companies will be prohibited from imposing lifetime limits on essential benefits, like hospital stays.
