New Poll, Same Old Story: Americans Want Action on Immigration Now

Time and again, political pollsters have asked Americans about the issue immigration, and time and again, Americans have responded with the same sentiment: We need Comprehensive Immigration Reform, and we need it now.

A new poll from Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates reinforces the notion that the need for comprehensive reform is urgent. In the firm's poll, the majority of Americans across party lines supported comprehensive reform.

The poll results revealed three key trends: Americans believe immigration is important, they are paying attention to the issue in the news and they want congress to take action. More specifically:

  1. As an issue, immigration is important to the American people. A majority believe it is very important (54%), while a significant number of people believe it is at least somewhat important (85%);

  2. Americans are paying attention to immigration issues. Close to one-third report following the issue very closely (29%), while over two-thirds report following the issue at least somewhat closely (69%);

  3. And Americans want Congress to act. The majority of Americans believe Congress needs to pass CIR now (59%). Among Democrats and Independents, this is especially true with support at 61% --- even among Republicans, support for CIR is at 59%.
