Jan Brewer's Latest Scheme? Ensuring Corporations Profit from a Broken Immigration System

Last week, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow unveiled the close links between private prison
corporations in Arizona and Governor Jan Brewer. In the wake of the recent escape
of three prisoners from a private Arizona penitentiary last week, Maddow documents
the "laxness" and overall failure of private prisons to maintain public safety and shows
how companies like Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) stand to profit from
recent controversial legislation. She highlights the deep links between CCA and Brewer,
including CCA's likely influence over the recent passage of anti-immigrant bill, SB1070.

Maddow brings to light two important issues: First, CCA has the contract to house
federal detainees (i.e. anyone violating immigration laws); second, two of CCA's former
lobbyists now work as aides to Arizona Governor Jan Brewer. It has become apparent
that there is a strong connection between Corrections Corporation, Gov. Jon Brewer and
other conservative state legislators who are part of the American Legislative Exchange
Commission (ALEC).
