We've launched a television ad in Virginia's 5th Congressional District.
"Record unemployment is devastating Virginia," says the ad's narrator. "Even Iraq and Afghanistan veterans face unemployment over 20 percent. But Robert Hurt consistently opposed extending unemployment benefits. He even said that if he were in Congress, he would have voted against extending federal unemployment benefits. An extension the Martinsville Bulletin called 'a lifeline' for people in Virginia. Hurt voted against helping our workers, our veterans and our families - maybe it's time to vote against Hurt."
SEIU's new television ad focuses on Robert Hurt's stance on unemployment benefits because it is an issue that resonates with hard-working families who live in the district.
"I'm a union member from Virginia's 5th congressional district," said Thomasine Wilson, a home care worker with SEIU Local 5 - VAPCA in Charlottesville, Va. "Times are tough. Dollars aren't stretching as far as they used to. I know so many in my hometown who are unemployed. Robert Hurt voted against helping those who are trying to find work. That's why I am voting for Tom Perriello."
SEIU COPE, which is paying for the ad, is funded by about 300,000 SEIU members who voluntarily contribute about $7 per month to have their voice heard in the political process.
