Earlier this year, Kern County Board of Supervisors in Bakersfield, California demanded that workers bear the brunt of attempts to balance the county's budget through reduced medical benefits and a shift in retirement costs.
For many workers and SEIU Local 521 members in the county, this would mean a pay cut of between 15 and 27 percent. And of those workers who would see cuts of 20 percent or more, nearly all make less than $40,000 a year. To fight back and make their voices heard, SEIU Local 521 launched KernVoice.org.
The website features the stories of real workers, the services they provide, their real pay and the very real, documented impact the pay cuts would have on them, their families, and their community.
