The Affordable Care Act: Moving Health Equity Forward For Communities Of Color #the-healthcare-law

People of color represent 33% of the total U.S. population, but make up more than 50% of the total number of uninsured.

The Affordable Care Act is a big milestone in the fight to end racial and ethnic disparities in our healthcare system. Thanks to the ACA, communities of color are experiencing increased access to health services and greatly improved health coverage.

Watch SEIU member and food service worker Gamaliel Andrade share about the positive impact the healthcare law is having on the kids he serves food to every day in the Los Angeles Romona Garden Housing Projects.

The healthcare law helps deliver better, more affordable care to African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans and Native Americans by:

  • Nearly doubling the number of patients served by community health centers - which are central to providing care in many African American, Latino, and Asian American communities.
  • Reducing discrimination in the health insurance market based upon medical history, including race, ethnicity, and gender.
  • Investing in research into the root causes of health disparities.
  • Focusing on cultural competency training for healthcare providers.
  • Providing scholarships and grants to increase diversity in the healthcare workforce.
