Research Analyst

Summary: This position is responsible for initiating and implementing projects and responding to requests in support of organizing, bargaining, and public policy/legislative issues of concern to workers.
Description:
  • Conducts research on special projects and issues: compiles and analyzes quantitative and qualitative information on public jurisdictions, industries, firms, individuals, and issues.
  • Provides strategic research and analysis in support of organizing, politics and contract campaigns.
  • Prepares reports, memos, and articles for publication, speeches, testimony, advertising, surveys, research methodologies, correspondence and other materials for use inside and outside of SEIU.
  • Completes requests from local union leaders and staff in support of organizing, collective bargaining and other union activities including financial and corporate information on jobs, and employer specific financial, power structure and funding analysis, economic and industry data (trends, structure, employment, funding, technology, regulatory, etc.), budget analyses, revenue forecasting, expenditure analysis, contract language analyses, comparisons and settlement reports, wage and benefits surveys and technical assistance such as budget and financial analysis.
  • Monitors federal, state, and local industry, regulatory and legislative developments; reads industry trade journals and other publications, maintains electronic and physical files.
  • Attends professional/industry conferences and meetings; liaisons with associations, other unions and represents SEIU.
  • Uses a wide variety of research methods and information sources including on-line databases, print information, interviews and original records.
  • Trains local union staff and members; researches current issues and prepares instructional reports and materials.
  • Speaks at conferences, educational workshops and other meetings on public sector and related industries and union issues.
  • Designs and prepares new instructional research reports, membership reports and other manuals; updates existing reports.
  • Maintains and develops “key” contract listings for workers contracts; monitors calendars, conducts special membership surveys and prepares estimates of membership by occupation, industry, region and local.
  • Mails SEIU materials and performs personal administrative duties; produces research materials.
  • Serves as researcher/consultant/trainer for SEIU industry campaigns.
  • Performs other duties as required to support the department and its mission.
Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelors degree in economics, business or a related field and at least one (1) year of experience in fiscal and financial analysis and prior experience with corporate financial analysis or industry budget analysis and revenue forecasting or a combination of education and experience that would provide for the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Knowledge of unions and their positions on worker issues.
  • Knowledge of corporate financial analysis including balance sheet, revenue/expense and cash flow statements.
  • Knowledge of revenue forecasting and budget analysis.
  • Ability to perform quantitative and qualitative analysis.
  • Ability to use personal computer, including spreadsheets, databases and on-line research services.
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Ability to conduct formal research, analyze data and make sound, logical conclusions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to make formal presentations and write advocacy papers.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and meet established timelines.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers for purposes of financial and data analysis.
  • Skill in the use of spreadsheets, database management systems, presentation software and on-line information sources.
Preferences: Researchers may report to a Senior Researcher, organizing (external) director, field (internal) director or local union officer, other assigned supervisor. Supervision and direction of researcher may change on a campaign-by-campaign or project-by-project basis. Researchers are frequently expected to operate without day-to-day supervision, to develop their own work plans and goals, and to act with a great degree of discretion and independent judgment. Accordingly, they must be strong self-starters and have a commitment to fulfill the objectives of the organization.
