SERVICE EMPLOYEES INTERNATIONAL UNION (SEIU), the nation's fastest growing labor organization representing more than 2.2 million workers, is seeking a Department Finance Specialist for its Washington, DC headquarters.

Purpose:
This position is responsible for coordinating with assigned departments on budgeting, planning and financial reporting. In addition, the position serves as a representative to departments on all policies and processes related to finance and accounting. This position serves in a “client focused” role in liaising with departments on behalf of Strategic Finance, enabled by a thorough understanding of accounting and finance practices. This position is also responsible for coordinating the workflow within the team.

  • Provides prompt, accurate and courteous assistance to departments in developing and managing budgets, including integration of department plans into the budget process.
  • Meets weekly with department managers and administrative staff to develop understanding of financial reports and tools throughout the organization.
  • Identifies and researches trends and briefs finance management on emerging budget issues, and assists department management in mitigating budget problems.
  • Monitors data quality for department customers and addresses quality control issues through appropriate channels.
  • Provides assistance to departments on implementing process changes and serves to develop understanding of importance of adhering to financial policies.
  • Reconciles and recommends resolution for report discrepancies and problems.
  • Coordinates and prepares pertinent information for internal and external clients (interdepartmental inquiries and accounting firms/auditors)

Direction and Decision Making:
This position reports to an Assistant Director of Strategic Finance for Budgeting Planning and Reporting and is expected to be an active participant within the Department of Strategic Finance.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in finance-related field; and three (3) years experience in financial reporting, budgeting or accounting.

Equivalency:
H.S. diploma or GED; advanced coursework in accounting, business, or related field; and seven (7) years of work experience in financial reporting, budgeting or accounting. All applicants/incumbents must be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Knowledge of basic financial metrics, accounting principles and processes
  • Ability to structure and analyze basic financial reports
  • General customer service skills and ability to build relationships easily
  • Ability to formulate a program budget, identify assumptions and variables
  • Ability to calculate standard financial ratios (current, liquidity, turnover, etc.) and prepare calculation schedules such as interest, depreciation and inter-fund allocations
  • Knowledge of basic rolling budget and forecasting principles
  • Ability to analyze financial conditions and apply them to the planning process
  • Ability to think critically and analytically in linking strategic planning to financial planning
  • Ability to multi-task, establish priorities and effectively organize work in a changing environment
  • Ability to maintain flexible attitude and approach toward assignments and actively participate in a team-based setting
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with SEIU managers and administrative staff in both written and oral presentation
  • Ability to communicate sensitive information to principals
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software – Excel, Word and SharePoint

Excel – Advanced Level

Physical Requirements:
Work is generally performed in an office setting. Long and extended hours and travel may be required (up to 10%).
