| Summary: | The SEIU Minnesota State Council will be hiring for the permanent, full-time position of Communications Director. The State Council acts as the point of coordination between the Locals and SEIU International to advance a pro-working families agenda at the local, state, and federal levels, support candidates who will forward that agenda, and build public support for the work of SEIU, and support and enhance the member and infrastructure capacities toward these ends. The Communications Director will manage the external communications work of the State Council, in conjunction with the Locals, and will report to the State Council Executive Director. |
| Description: | - Develop and execute an external communications plan in consultation with the Locals and allied organizations, in support of the work of the Locals and State Council, including work to build public understanding of the causes of our current economic crisis and the need for good jobs now;
- Facilitate the coordination of communications work between the State Council, Locals, projects and campaigns of SEIU within the context of the communications plan;
- Craft message frames based on data from various sources;
- Generate earned media through events, actions, and releases;
- Train and promote SEIU members and elected leaders as effective messengers;
- Work with the Information Systems Coordinator on the development and enhancement of the State Council’s online presence.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Develop the long-term external political communications plan for the State Council;
- Develop plans to build public support for organizing campaigns;
- Convene regular communications staff coordinating conversations;
- Assist the Locals in crafting effective messages;
- Represent SEIU at political communications tables;
- Analyze polling and focus group data from SEIU and allies to develop effective messaging;
- Perform outreach and maintain strong relationships with press;
- Draft and target press releases and accompanying social media;
- Draft letters to the editor, op-eds, and stories;
- Plan press events and media plans for direct actions;
- Train SEIU members, staff, and elected leaders in effective communications and messaging;
- Promote SEIU members and elected leaders as resources to media outlets;
- Work with the Information Systems Coordinator to develop an online communications plan;
- Draft online content;
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

| Qualifications: | - Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- Ability to work independently and in a team, and to organize and handle multiple tasks with great attention to detail;
- Experience working on candidate and issue campaigns, with a preference for work within the labor or social justice movements;
- Spanish language proficiency preferred;
