Just Say No: SEIU Members Protest Romney/Ryan Economy #default

Middle-Class-Melting.jpg If Mitt Romney is elected president of the United States, Oladee Fair, a member of SEIU Virginia 512, has a plan: she's going to grow some money. That may sound ludicrous, but the Fairfax County Employee says she won't have any other options.

For years now, Odalee has dreamed of becoming financially independent by starting her own business and knows there is start-up money available from the government. However, she also realizes that if Romney makes it to the White House, that money may disappear right before her eyes. That's because under the economic plan envisioned for the country by Romney and Ryan, working people like Odalee will be left with little more than the clothes on their backs.

Odalee felt compelled to share her story on August 30, the day of Romney's coronation by the GOP. She was just one of thousands of SEIU members who stood in solidarity with the 99% to speak out against a Romney's economic vision for the country.

"I'm not a trust-fund baby. I don't have a rich, dying uncle," Odalee said. "If we get Romney and Ryan as our president and vice president, I can see all of those dreams and aspirations and all of that start-up money from the government vanishing into thin air. I shudder to think that that might be the reality when I wake up after Super Tuesday."

Across the United States, SEIU members shouted with one, solid voice NO to an economy that benefits only the rich, NO to more layoffs, NO to more outsourcing, and NO to more cuts that hurt working families. Locals planned multiple, simultaneous events throughout their jurisdictions and were able to capture the attention of community activists, allies and SEIU members, many of who were new to the activist scene.

In Concord, NH, activists dressed as the Marx brothers to bring humor to an otherwise depressing situation. Standing outside the statehouse with giant scissors in hand, John Hattan of the Concord City Democrats and Kenneth Roos of SEIU symbolically destroyed women's breast cancer screenings, Medicaid for needy families, and union benefits--the same services Romney and Ryan have promised to do away with.

In California, SEIU members teamed up with community groups to march through the streets of San Jose, where they carried signs and demanded an end to job loss. In Indiana, working families rallied outside of a convention center to get their voices heard. In Michigan, it seemed the entire state was alive with action. Protests were held in Cheboygan, Dearborn, Marquette, Saginaw, and Traverse City. And in Florida, SEIU members rolled out the red carpet to speak the truth about Romney and Ryan--that their budget would leave no billionaire behind.
