On March 1st, the automatic government spending cuts, known as the "sequester," will take effect. While the deal that the President and Republican leaders struck to avert the "fiscal cliff" delayed these cuts, Republicans are still clamoring for cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and the Affordable Care Act that will hurt working families and local economies.
Today throughout the country, community groups are joining together to deliver a message to their elected officials: America needs jobs, not cuts.
You can follow those events on this Storify as they happen throughout the day.
Earlier today, SEIU joined with our partners in labor - including AFSCME, AFT, the NEA and HCAN, as well as many others across the progressive community in a "Thunderclap." Thunderclap is an online tool that creates a collective voice by giving groups the chance to say something together at the same time in social media, including Facebook and Twitter.
At noon Eastern Time, 5,977 people sent our #JobsNotCuts message to more than 1,869,096 people. It was the largest political Thunderclap in the history of the Thunderclap. Thank you to those who participated!
