With more than 345 cars and buses carrying more than 5,000 people, the largest caravan in California history roared into Bakersfield today to call on Republican House Whip Kevin McCarthy to push for a vote on commonsense immigration reform with a pathway to citizenship by September 30. Rep. McCarthy is the third highest-ranking Republican in the House.
"We're here to tell Congressman McCarthy that the time is now to reform our broken immigration system and provide a path to citizenship for 11 million aspiring Americans," said SEIU Secretary-Treasurer Eliseo Medina as he rallied union members and immigration activists earlier this morning.

"As a leader within the House Republican caucus, Congressman McCarthy has a responsibility to encourage his colleagues to move forward on commonsense immigration reform. He was elected to lead and fix problems that impact his constituents, not to avoid or perpetuate them. We expect more and hope he responds. But until he does, we will continue to remind him of his obligations."
