WASHINGTON—In response to California Gov. Jerry Brown’s announcement of a path forward on raising the state’s minimum wage to $15, SEIU International President Mary Kay Henry issued the following statement:
“For everyone from the fast-food cooks and cashiers who started the Fight for $15 three years ago to all the working men and women who will benefit from better wages they can sustain a family on, this is a huge victory.
“It's a win that shows the power of standing up and sticking together — it's how you make the impossible possible. It also shows the power that the 64 million people all over the country who make less than $15 will bring to the ballot box this November. No wonder more elected officials and candidates are responding to working people's call for $15 an hour and union rights.
“The Fight for $15 has won from Seattle to New York to, now, the entire state of California — inspiring victories that working people elsewhere can look to. Thank you, Gov. Brown, for hearing working people and responding to their movement in the streets for a better future for working families.”
