Building Power

The Institute has developed a set of frames-critical ways of thinking-that respond directly to the assets, liabilities and opportunities in the SEIU.
Change can be shaped, even driven. Successful 21st century organizations will be technologically nimble, flexible, and quick to analyze data, re-strategize, and act.
Power comes from winning. The way to achieve social and economic justice is to win elections, enact legislation, set policy, grow memberships, and forge strategic alliances.
Leaders are essential. The key to a more powerful movement are collectives of more powerful people. People make change possible when they "dig deep," take risks, and develop as leaders.
Fast-growing, smart organizations prize relationships. People in strong organizations feel valued, find community, learn together, take on leadership, and mentor newcomers.
Big is often better. A smart, bold and organized big organization will win more often than a smart, bold and organized small one. To move a national agenda, big is essential.
Organizations get stronger when they learn. In the words of Andy Stern, president of SEIU, "We know what we know. I'm more worried about what we don't know."
Psychological awareness is a powerful tool for change. If you know your own heart, you choose more wisely. If you are aware of others' feelings and passions, you will be a better leader.
No one can do it all. Being really good at some things means not trying to do others. Individuals and organizations that try to be everything will most likely not be much.
There is no short-term fix. Building a strong, national infrastructure for progressive leadership development and organizational change will require decades of strategic work.
Change is hindered by a pattern of underinvestment. To ensure its success, the Institute and its partners must attract long-term, reliable investments in their future.
