Environmental Labor Management Committees

Environmental Labor Management Committees are similar to health and safety committees. Local unions can establish--through collective bargaining or otherwise--a committee dedicated to addressing environmental issues.  Such a committee could address everything from recycling policies to worker exposure to toxic chemicals, to energy use.  A Labor/Management committee provides a way for employees and management to engage on these important issues outside of the regular contract cycle.

To ensure that the committee effectively represents the workers concerns:

• Workers and management should be equally represented on the committee and have equal voting rights;
• Worker representatives must have an equal right to set the agenda and provide input;
• Workers should have the authority to appoint their own representatives of the committee.
