Improving Security

Private security officers are a critical part of the network of first responders, but turnover among security officers is a major problem. Security officer turnover rates in non-union markets often average 100-300% per year - rates that rival the fast food industry.

Our emergency response network is only as effective as its weakest link. We must ensure preparedness and high professional standards for the private security officers who guard our nation's critical infrastructure. Most importantly, that means reducing the turnover rate. Skills development and job training will not be effective, or cost-effective, if the security officers who receive skills training consistently leave their jobs after only a few weeks or months.

The only proven way to reduce turnover is to provide more incentives for workers to stay on the job by raising pay and benefits, increasing professional training, and creating concrete opportunities for career advancement. With real, long-term career opportunities in the security profession and beyond, officers will have more incentives to stay on the job longer.

SEIU has initiated efforts in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago to improve training and industry accountability.
