Even without an economic incentive provided by the employer, carpooling saves money for the workers and is environmentally beneficial.

Bargaining teams can negotiate for provisions to establish a car pool program and provide incentives for workers who carpool.

This could include parking places for carpool participants, relief from discipline for workers who are late because of a problem with the carpool, and an employer-provided system for workers interested in carpooling to find one another.

Some SEIU janitors’ Locals have incentives for ride-sharing and carpooling.  Some of these are financial, but most involve relief from discipline that would otherwise be given for tardiness.

The Local or the employer, or a joint labor-management committee, can also facilitate such ride-sharing through the establishment of a ride-board or similar information sharing mechanism.
